Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Her father, who was a carnival barker, was killed when she was a small child, forcing her mother to help support her family through work as waitress or cleaning lady. Ruth was born in the poorest neighborhood in Boston Massachusetts where she attended high school. She left the school she was attending just two years later in pursuit of a career as an actor. The path she chose to take turned out to be strewn with obstacles and In New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills for a magazine about crime however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. The next position she was offered was an "hat check" lady at a club but she quit and relocated to Boston. The city of Boston was where she worked during the night as an actor with New England Repertory Company and the rest of the time as an usherette. She studied drama at The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
